We’re Leaving Dallas! Here’s Why and What’s Next

As I type this I am sitting in our home in Dallas surrounded by moving boxes packed with all of our belongings. I am full of mixed emotions but mostly excitement. Long story short, we’re leaving Dallas.

The doors have opened for us to leave home and travel the USA this spring while working remotely… and so why wouldn’t we do it? We will be storing just about everything we own, leaving the comfort of our small but homey apartment in Dallas, and hitting the road.

Are we leaving Dallas for good? No. We do intend to return to our home city in the near term, but we do not currently have any housing lined up in Dallas – so who knows? There’s a bit of excitement in the not-knowing.

A Quick Review of 2020 & How We Got Here

I know I am not alone in saying this but 2020 was a very hard and unexpectant year.

We started 2020 with so many hopes and plans. Many of those plans included travel to destinations that have been on our bucket lists for years.

I don’t need to remind you what happened in March 2020. All of our plans came to a screeching halt.

Work Life in 2020

In addition to all of the shutdowns, the past year has been a very hard one for all healthcare workers. Not only have I had to come face-to-face with COVID (decked head-to-toe in PPE) but also a company buyout with reduced hours and wages.

Without trying to complain about all of the stressors of being a healthcare worker during a pandemic, I’ll just say that its been a year of stress and frustration. I’m eager for a break and a breath of fresh air.

Randy (my hubby and favorite travel companion) works a corporate job that immediately switched to work-from-home when the pandemic hit. Almost 11 months later, he’s still working from home (out of our tiny apartment) with no set plans to return to the office in the next few months. Let’s just say that he’s also eager for a change of scenery.

For the most part, we’ve been able to make the most of this year and as restrictions lifted over the summer, we were able to explore some pretty epic national parks and natural wonders around the U.S. All while following local governments safety advisories and rules.

What’s Next for Us….

I have been dreaming of the digital nomad life for some time now and since Randy’s basically a digital nomad for the time being, we’re going to make the most of it!

Last summer, we started discussing the possibility of living somewhere other than Texas while Randy’s job is still remote. But we had this one thing still tying us down: our apartment and monthly rent payments. Now that our lease is coming to an end, we have a lot more freedom and flexibility to make a somewhat non-conventional and temporary life change.

Slow travel will be our way of life for the next couple of months. Currently, we’ve got a couple of month-long Airbnb rentals lined up in some pretty epic spots. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to gain a more full experience of a location. As opposed to moving 1,000 MPH during our typical weekend getaways.

So, where are we headed first? We are going to COLORADO!

I have been dreaming of moving West for years (especially to Colorado)! The western half of the U.S. has some of the most beautiful landscapes and most awe-inspiring natural wonders in the entire world. We are SO stoked to spend some time exploring Colorado, the Rocky Mountains, and more of the west.

Snow Day in Dallas one week before we head to Colorado. Great time to test out our snow gear!

What You Can Expect to See From the Postcard Traveler in 2021

I am so excited about some of the things I have planned for the blog this year. And I’m looking forward to having much more time to devote to creating more blog posts and better travel content.

You can definitely expect more outdoor adventures, hiking guides, and all things National Parks. These things are what I’m most passionate about and enjoy sharing with you the most.

We’ll start off in Colorado during its snowiest month of the year, so I’ll be exploring all things winter in Colorado. If you have any great Colorado winter recommendations, leave them in the comments below! I’d love to hear your recommendations and input.
